Abstract
Acute promyelocytic leukemia was recognized as a specific subtype of acute myeloid leukemia in 1957 by Hillestad. Acute promyelocytic leukemia is characterized by the translocation (15;17), accumulation of atypical promyelocytes in the bone marrow and severe coagulopathy. The introduction of all-trans retinoic ac d has revolutionized the management and outcome of this disease, leading to a complete remission in more than 90% when it is combined with anthracyclines.
In general, all-trans retinoic acid is well tolerated, although it could provoke some side effects such as differentiation syndrome. Thrombocytosis is a rare adverse event of all-trans retinoic acid published by Losada et al in 1996, the mechanism through which all-trans retinoic acid increases platelets was later explained by Kinjo et al. We report two patients with diagnosis of acute promyelocytic leukemia, who developed thrombocytosis during treatment with alltrans retinoic acid, with a spontaneous resolution after drug withdrawing.
