Abstract
Fertility preservation is important for childhood and adolescent cancer survivors. Many patients will maintain their reproductive potential after successful completion of cancer treatment. However, total body radiation, gonadal radiation and chemotherapy regimens containing high doses of alkylating agents may put women at risk of ovarian failure or premature menopause and men at risk of temporary or permanent azoospermia. Established methods for preserving fertility are cryopreservation of embryos, oocytes, and ovarian tissue in women and cryopreservation of sperm in men before initiation of therapy. Providing information about the risk of infertility and possible interventions to maintain reproductive potential is critical for pediatric and adolescent patients at the time of diagnosis.
