Abstract
The hematopoietic system is an organ with particular characteristics, with the capacity to self-renew and differentiate itself, guaranteeing a constant number of precursors and the production of all the blood cells throughout an individual´s life. The differentiation to the different cell profiles will depend on the activation stimulies generated and the selective expression of surface receptors which allow the mobilization of cells from the bone marrow towards the effectors sites. The continuous stimulation of hematopoietic cells may be harmful for them, contributing in the development of oncological or autoimmune diseases. The discovery of the SURVIVIN protein provides the opportunity for the investigation of a potential therapeutic target for the apoptosis modulation of these deregulated cells.
